Farm Fresh Eggs, Happy Hens, and What You Need to Know About the Chicken Molt

We are so excited to share that our hens are now old enough to lay—and that means farm fresh brown eggs are here at 4:11 Farms! 🐓🥚

Our pasture raised eggs aren’t just different because of their color. They’re different because of how our hens live. Every day they have access to fresh grass, bugs, and sunshine. They’re free to scratch, peck, and run around just like chickens should. We regularly move them to new pasture, which keeps them healthy and keeps the land healthy, too.

All of that makes a big difference in the final product. Our eggs are rich in flavor, full of nutrition, and come from hens that are cared for the right way. When chickens are happy, their eggs are better and you can taste the difference!

If you’ve ever wondered why farm-fresh eggs aren’t always available year-round, or why your hens stop laying eggs in the fall or winter, here’s the reason: hens naturally go through a process called a molt.

Once a year, usually in the late summer or fall, hens shed their old feathers and grow in a new set. It’s like a reset for their bodies. Because it takes so much energy to regrow feathers, egg production slows way down or even stops during this time. On top of that, the shorter winter days also affect laying. Hens need about 14–16 hours of daylight to produce eggs regularly, so in the winter they take a natural break.

The good news? Once spring comes and the days get longer, they’ll start laying again. Until then, we enjoy giving them the rest they need and looking forward to the season ahead.
